Rozzie May Celebrates 10,000 Surgery Milestone

Conway, NH – Rozzie May Animal Alliance reached a major milestone last week when it performed its 10,000th spay neuter surgery on a cat named MC at its low-cost clinic in Conway.

“We are delighted to reach this major landmark,’” said Eileen Lippe, president of RMAA and a Bartlett resident. “We knew when we started in 2007 that we could make a major difference in the lives of animals and reduce the number of homeless pets in our communities through affordable spay neuter surgeries. But to reach this milestone just nine years later is amazing.”

Lippe credits this achievement to the organization’s devoted donors, volunteers and mission-driven staff. And while little MC may not have been thrilled about his trip to the vet, his owner Lynn Lipari certainly was. “I've had three stray or abandoned cats come to my home during the past four years. The first thing I do, after I fatten them up a little bit, is bring them to Rozzie May to be spayed or neutered,” she explained. “The people at Rozzie May are friendly, experienced and I know that they do what they do because they care about the animals."

Veterinarian Dr. Nan Beury and RMAA’s veterinary team, led by Clinic Director Kristie McNulty, perform an average of 50 surgeries each week on both cats and dogs. Known for their excellent veterinary care and affordable prices, RMAA’s clients come from throughout New Hampshire, western Maine and as far south as Massachusetts.

In addition to their West Main Street clinic in Conway, RMAA runs two community-based services in an effort to reach as many towns as possible. The Feline-Fix-It Wagon, their mobile surgical unit, travels throughout New Hampshire and western Maine during the warmer months, setting up shop at local hardware and feed stores. In the winter, RMAA runs their Cat Cab, providing transportation to and from their Conway clinic to cats in towns throughout the region.

“Spay neuter is the most effective and humane way to address pet overpopulation. We want to remove as many barriers to this life-saving surgery as possible,” explains Meaghan Woodsome, RMAA program director. “Cost is a hurdle for many, which is why our nonprofit status is so important. But proximity to veterinary care is also a challenge, particularly in rural states like Maine and New Hampshire.”

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, cats and dogs can be altered as young as eight to ten weeks old, and early surgery has many benefits, including faster recovery time.

“The days of waiting to spay or neuter your pets until they reach sexual maturity, typically around five months of age, are over. Early surgery has many benefits, including a faster recovery time, and it reduces your chances of a surprise litter,” Woodsome went on to say. “In just 2 years, a single cat and her offspring can produce 73 cats. And in five years, a dog and her offspring can produce 7,776 puppies. There’s no way we can adopt out that many puppies and kittens, as cute as they are. That’s why we say spay neuter saves lives – it really does.”

The nonprofit’s services are very affordable at $60 for male cats and $75 for females. Rates for dogs run from $80 – $150, depending on sex and size. These fees include surgery, medications, ear cleaning, nail trim, flea pill, and rabies vaccine (for cats over 3 months). Other services, such as distemper vaccines, deworming and microchips are available for an additional charge. Appointments are required and there is additional financial support for qualified Maine residents of Oxford County through a grant from the Cleo Fund.
