NONPROFIT AIMS TO IMPROVE ANIMAL WELFARE
Removing Financial Obstacles Key to Success
North Conway, NH – On Sunday, August 30th from 11:30am until 3pm the nonprofit animal welfare group Rozzie May Animal Alliance will hold its annual benefit auction and luncheon at the Red Jacket Mountain View Resort, located at 2251 White Mountain Highway.
As recent reports of animal cruelty in Ossipee, NH, Farmington, ME and Newburyport, MA demonstrate, pet overpopulation and its impact on animal welfare is an ongoing problem in New England. RMAA hopes to change this through its low-cost spay neuter clinics held in communities throughout New Hampshire and western Maine.
“We feel that the most humane way to address the issue of pet overpopulation and the strain it puts on local animal shelters is by ensuring that affordable spay neuter services are available to as many pet owners as possible,” explains Meaghan Woodsome, RMAA program director.
To that end, RMAA has “fixed” more than nine thousand cats and dogs in the eight years since they incorporated, preventing a conservative estimate of 635,000 potential births. They hope to double their number of surgeries in the next five years.
There are some obstacles, though. First among them? Cash. “All our services are subsidized through donations and grants, making them truly accessible. This is key to fighting pet overpopulation because it removes the main objection people have to spaying or neutering – cost,” says Woodsome.
“Our upcoming auction is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Without this important source of funding we can’t fulfill our mission,” says Eileen Lippe, RMAA president. “We’re asking for support from the community to help us continue these crucial services. Attending our event will help us raise the funds needed to address pet overpopulation at its source and prevent future cases of animal cruelty.”
Now in its eighth year, the RMAA auction and luncheon features a few changes from previous years, including a new venue and some new faces, including Woodsome herself. However, the nonprofit’s new program director is quick to point out that much remains the same.
“Our mission is as relevant today as it was eight years ago,” says Woodsome. “And just like our past luncheons, we’ve got a great afternoon of fun planned, with a delicious buffet, live music, incredible auction items and a gorgeous view of the mountains. And it’s all in support of the animals.”
